The line-up for this year’s student-produced One Act Play Contest has been set! We’d like to congratulate the following student writers and directors for their selected plays and participation in the event. The finalists are (in no particular order):
GROUNDNUT STEW – written by Tino Mori, directed by Andrew Schoenborn
JUNGLERS – written by Sam Chapman, directed by Lauren Rekhelman
SKIN LIKE IRON – written by Sam Gelband, directed by Eli Zavatsky
This year, the selection committee consisted of five Whitman theatre students and one faculty member. One of these students, senior Emily Krause, wrote that, “When thinking about which plays to choose, we tried to think about plays with casting opportunities that would pull from our wide pool of talent, as well as offer exciting prospects for our student directors and designers. …for me it was a total thrill and honor to get to witness so much incredible student writing and to play a part in helping three writers see their work realized.”
Krause also added that the committee determined that these three scripts hold especially strong voices and exciting theatrical possibilities. “They are all imaginative, at times hilarious, sincere, and down to earth. And things like having a show with original songs in it – it just doesn’t get more exciting than that!”
In addition to being student-written and directed, all three plays are comprised entirely of student actors, designers, and technicians.
Come see them perform and compete for prizes starting next Wednesday evening! After each performance, audience members will cast their votes to determine which play will be named the winner!
